The little mother-daughter struggles mask the bigger ones. Whenever the actress would say pasta instead of noodles, “It was as if I were throwing my big-city ways in her face. Sweeney is especially funny when it comes to describing her relationship with her provincial mother. They portray a woman still in the process of defining herself, who is trying to handle all the sudden traffic in her new bachelorette bungalow. There are no puns or punchlines, just carefully etched cameos in fluid succession. Freed from the restraints of that skit and that legacy, Sweeney shows a skillful way with the gently meandering comic vignette. ![]() Sweeney’s comedic skills were never much valued at “SNL,” where her only recurring character was Pat, the androgynous, whining lump whose gender was always in doubt. This is the rueful comic sensibility that informs “God Said, Ha!,” a moving and very realistic account of what it’s like to deal with cancer and a concerned but annoying family at the same time. Her brother, endowed with the Sweeney humor, accused her of trying to “hog the cancer spotlight. In a cruel twist of fate, the actress already was caring for her mortally ill brother when she found out that she, too, had cancer. ![]() ![]() The result was her one-woman Broadway show, “God Said, Ha!,” which she has now captured, pretty much intact, on film.
